FLUFF MONSTERS

A free pattern for you today – a trio of fluff monsters. These fluffy monsters were originally featured in Simply Crochet Magazine.

When making the body of the monsters, most of the stitches will be worked in the back loops only (apart from the first few rounds when making up the base). Then, when the monster is almost finished the fuzzy yarn is crocheted on all over the surface of the monster into the front loops left over. This can be a little fiddly but well worth the effort. These patterns can also be made without the fuzzy yarn – just crochet into both loops when making the body.

UK Crochet terms

 You will need;

• King Cole Bamboo Cotton DK 100g in colours: Grey (552), Dusty Pink (618), Lemon (3199), Cream (538)
• King Cole Moments 100% Polyester 50g in colours: Grey (3229), Soft Pink (479), Yellow, (1610)
• 3mm (US C/2 or D/3) hook 
• Toy filling 
• 3 pairs of 12mm safety eyes (metal backed eyes work the best)
• Embroidery needle 
• Stitch markers
• Some stiff card, plastic canvas or similar

Tension not critical for this project.

Finished sizes
Blue monster: 12cm (4.75”) in height.
Pink Monster: 11cm (4.25”) in height
Yellow Monster: 8cm (3”) in height

The pattern is worked using the amigurumi method. Work stitches continuously in a spiral without closing off each round with a slip stitch. It may help to use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round, moving it up as you work.

BLUE FLUFF MONSTER

BLUE MONSTER BODY
Using Yarn A, make a magic loop.
Round 1 Ch1 (doesn’t count as a st throughout), 6dc into the loop. [6 sts]
Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 sts]
Round 3 (2dc in next st, 1dc) 6 times. [18 sts]
Round 4 (2dc in next st, 2dc) 6 times. [24 sts]
Round 5 (2dc in next st, 3dc) 6 times. [30 sts]
Round 6 (2dc in next st, 4dc) 6 times. [36 sts]
Round 7 (2dc in next st, 5dc) 6 times. [42 sts]
Round 8 (2dc in next st, 6dc) 6 times. [48 sts]
Round 9 (2dc in next st, 7dc) 6 times. [54 sts]
Place the base onto your card / plastic canvas and draw around the circle. Cut the circle out slightly smaller than you drew. Put aside.
Rounds 10-23 Dc in each st around in BLO and throughout rest of body.
Place the card / plastic canvas circle into the base of the monster. Stuff the body and stuff as you go.
Round 24 (dc2tog, 7dc) 6 times. [48 sts]
Round 25 (dc2tog, 6dc) 6 times. [42 sts]
Round 26 (dc2tog, 5dc) 6 times. [36 sts]
Round 27 (dc2tog, 4dc) 6 times. [30 sts]
Round 28 (dc2tog, 3dc) 6 times. [24 sts]
Round 29 (dc2tog, 2dc) 6 times. [18 sts]
Round 30 (dc2tog, 1dc) 6 times. [12 sts]
Round 31 (dc2tog) 6 times. [6 sts]
Fasten off. Use the tail end and an embroidery needle to sew around the stitches of the last round, pull the yarn to close the hole and weave in end.

BLUE MONSTER EARS (MAKE 2)
Using Yarn A, make a magic loop.
Round 1 Ch1, 6dc into the loop. [6 sts]
Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 sts]
Round 3 (2dc in next st, 1dc) 6 times. [18 sts]
Round 4 (2dc in next st, 2dc) 6 times. [24 sts]
Rounds 5-10 Dc in each st around.
Round 11 (dc2tog, 2dc) 6 times. [18 sts]
Rounds 12-14 Dc in each st around.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

BLUE MONSTER FACE
Using Yarn D, ch 5
Round 1 2dc in 2^nd ch from hook, 2dc, 2dc in next ch, working along the other side of the ch 2dc in next ch, 2dc, 2dc in next ch. [12 sts]
Round 2 2dc in next st, 4dc, 2dc in next 2 sts, 4dc, 2dc in next st. [16 sts]
Round 3 2dc in next 2 sts, 5dc, 2dc in next 3 sts, 5dc, 2dc in next st. [22 sts]
Round 4 2dc in next st, 1dc, 2dc in next st, 6dc, 2dc in next st, 1dc, 2dc in next st, 1dc, 2dc in next st, 6dc, 2dc in next st, 1dc. [28 sts]
Round 5 (1dc, 2dc in next st, 1dc, 2dc in next st, 9dc, 2dc in next st) 2 times. [34 sts]

Using Yarn D, make a magic loop.
Round 1 Ch1, 6dc into the loop. [6 sts]
Round 2 Dc in each st around.

Round 4 Dc in each st around.
Round 5 (2dc in next st, 3dc) 2 times. [10 sts]

Make as rounds 1-5 of Blue Monster Face.
Sl st then fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Using Yarn D, make a magic loop.
Round 1 Ch1, 6dc into the loop. [6 sts]
Round 2 2dc in next st, 5dc. [7 sts]

PINK MONSTER SPINES

Spines 1 & 2
Using Yarn B, make a magic loop.
Round 1 Ch1, 5dc into the loop. [5 sts]
Round 2 2dc in each st around. [10 sts]
Rounds 3-5 Dc in each st around.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Spine 3
Using Yarn B, make a magic loop.
Round 1 Ch1, 6dc into the loop. [6 sts]
Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 sts]
Rounds 3-5 Dc in each st around.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Spine 4
Using Yarn B, make a magic loop.
Rounds 1-5 As rounds 1-5 of spine 3
Round 6 Dc in each st around.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

YELLOW FLUFF MONSTER

Using Yarn C, make a magic loop.
Rounds 1-7 As rounds 1-7 of Blue Monster Body [42 sts]
Rounds 8-18 Dc in each st around in BLO and throughout rest of body.
Round 19 (dc2tog, 5dc) 6 times. [36 sts]
Round 20 (dc2tog, 4dc) 6 times. [30 sts]
Round 21 (dc2tog, 3dc) 6 times. [24 sts]
Round 22 (dc2tog, 2dc) 6 times. [18 sts]
Round 23 (dc2tog, 1dc) 6 times. [12 sts]
Round 24 (dc2tog) 6 times. [6 sts]
Fasten off. Use the tail end and an embroidery needle to sew around the stitches of the last round, pull the yarn to close the hole and weave in end.

YELLOW MONSTER EARS (MAKE 2)

Using Yarn D, make a magic loop.
Round 1 Ch1, 6dc into the loop. [6 sts]
Round 2 (2dc in next st, 2dc) 2 times. [8 sts]
Round 3 (2dc in next st, 3dc) 2 times. [10 sts]
Round 4 (2dc in next st, 4dc) 2 times. [12 sts]
Round 5 (2dc in next st, 5dc) 2 times. [14 sts]
Round 6 (2dc in next st, 6dc) 2 times. [16 sts]
Round 7 (2dc in next st, 7dc) 2 times. [18 sts]
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

YELLOW MONSTER TAIL
Make as rounds 1-9 of Pink Monster Horn in Yarn C.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

YELLOW MONSTER FACE
Make as rounds 1-4 of Blue Monster Face.
Sl st then fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

ASSEMBLY
Insert 2 eyes onto each face and fix the back in place (you may need to adjust the position of the eyes a few times before fixing the back on to make sure they look symmetrical). Sew a little mouth for each monster in Yarn B. Position the face onto the body and wiggle the eye post between the stitches on the body. Sew in place using the tail ends.

Sew all the other body parts (ears, horns, tails, spines) in place. Spine 4 is positioned immediately above the tail on the Pink Monster, then spine 3, 2 and then 1 at the top of the head.

Weave in all ends.

Now the eyelash yarn is crocheted over the surface of each monster. Starting with Blue Monster, find the start of the spiral at the base. Join Yarn E. Dc into each FL. You will need to keep changing directions as you work around each body piece. You may need to fasten off and re-join the yarn as needed.

Repeat with the Pink Monster using Yarn F and the Yellow Monster Using Yarn G.
