Crochet at Work
A new amigurumi crochet book OUT NOW. Get your copy here.
My new debut book ‘Crochet at Work’ will be published next month so I thought I’d tell you a little about it.
The book actually started life as a magazine supplement with 6 of the dolls; the Astronaut, Diver, Scientist, Firefighter, Pilot and Explorer. I had wanted to expand on the theme and create many more ‘career’ dolls so I teamed up with GMC Publications to make it happen. In total there are 20 dolls but the book is designed in a way that you can customise the patterns to make your own unique doll. These are dolls to be played with, not to sit on a shelf getting dusty. They are for any child who says “When I grow up I want to be a…”.
So why is this book different?
Firstly, the book has three different body shapes/sizes too choose from, and you can make any doll in any shape. Here you can see the Diver, Singer and Farmer in the three shapes. At the beginning of the book it shows you how to make all 3 shapes, then on the individual doll patterns pages, it shows you how to adapt those patterns to create your chosen doll.
Secondly, there are ten hairstyle options (with five variations) with thirteen different hair colours to choose from (if you use the yarn recommenced in the book). Then there are also thirteen different skin colours to choose. With all these different variables to choose from there are over 100,000 combinations to make!
One of the best features of these patterns is that the dolls are all crocheted in one piece. I know a lot of people (me included) hate sewing pieces together at the end, which is why, when I started out designing I made sure there was little sewing involved. All the clothes of the dolls are created by colour changing rather than making separate pieces. Some do have separate extras like the Builder’s hi-vis jacket, or the scrubs for the Doctor and Vet.
Accessories
Every doll has at least one accessory to complete their look, for example the Racing Car Driver has a trophy, the Teacher some books and the Chef an apron and hat.
The book is available to order here.
