Did you take part in Granny Square Day last weekend? I loved seeing all the colourful squares across Instagram. In case you missed it, here’s a granny square I shared on my page.

Abbreviations

R Round
ch Chain
dc Double crochet
htr Half treble
tr Treble crochet
dtr Double treble crochet
sl st Slip stitch

ch sp Chain space

R 1 Make a magic ring in red, 6dc into ring. Pull ring tight. (6sts)
R 2 2dc in each st around. (12sts)
R 3 (2dc in next st, 1dc) 6 times. (18sts)
R 4 (2dc in next st, 2dc) 6 times. (24sts)
R 5 (2dc in next st, 3dc) 6 times. (30sts)
Fasten off and join light green.
R 6 (2dc in next st, 4dc) 6 times. (36sts)
Fasten off and join dark green.
R 7 (2dc in next st, 5dc) 6 times. (42sts)
R 8 3dc, (2dc in next st, 6dc) 5 times, 2dc in next st, 3dc. (48sts)
(NB: staggering the increases in this last round creates a nice smooth curve rather then a hexagon shape)
Sl st into 1st dc then fasten off.
Using black, make small stitches over the red area for the seeds.
Join white in any st.
R 9 Ch3, 1tr in next st, *2htr, 3dc, 2htr, 2tr, (2dtr, ch2, 2dtr) in next st, 2tr*, 2 times more, 2htr, 3dc, 2htr, 2tr, (2dtr, ch2, 2dtr) in next st, sl st to top of beg ch3 to join.
R 10 Ch3, *1tr in each st till you reach corner ch sp, (2tr, ch2, 2tr) in ch sp,* 3 times more, tr in each st to end, sl st to top of beg ch3 to join.
Fasten off, weave in ends. Block.
