Crochet some Christmas stars

crochet stars

Crochet some Christmas stars with this free crochet pattern. I have been making lots of stars recently. Sometimes I get a bit obsessed with a pattern and have to make it in every possible way so have I been playing around with different yarns which has been fun. It’s a little different to my usual amigurumi but I have had COVID so didn’t really feel like tackling anything big, especially as the children have been off school (distraction central). I feel thankful my illness was fairly mild and the children didn’t have any symptoms at all.

I designed these stars for Crochet Club magazine a couple of years ago. They asked me to use red and white to create this Scandi style which I really love. There are three stars; two 5-point stars in 2 sizes and a 6-point star. The pattern can be found at the bottom of the post, but first here are the results of me using any yarn within arms reach to make a selection of stars.

Star garland

These stars are made in Scheepjes Catona 100% cotton. I made 9 stars, some in solid colours and some in red and white. When they were complete I started with a chain then slip stitched into the top of a star, then continued with the chain joining the stars at intervals. There are 40 chains between each star here.

Present decorations

You can use the Christmas stars to adorn gifts. Here I have used plain brown paper with string for the bow. You could sew the star onto a brown paper tag so you can write a message on the gift. Why not use them as as tree decorations by making a hanging loop.

Super sized stars

Large crocheted star

I bought this gorgeous braided cord by Bobbiny when I was at Yarndale this year so I had a go making a star with it and I’m really happy with the result. Here I had to increase the initial chain when making this big star to fit all the stitches in the first round.

Solid Colours

Solid bright stars would also make a really lovely garland or tree decorations. These are all made in Catona again which is mercerised cotton which gives the stars a really nice sheen.

Multi-coloured Stars

This didn’t come out at all as I had imagined them and are not my favourite, but would still look cute on a Christmas tree.

Variegated Yarns

Another purchase at Yarndale which I didn’t have a plan for, so I thought I’d make some stars. I really like how they’ve come out and would make a great addition to a rainbow / neon style Christmas tree.

The Pattern

red and white crocheted stars

As I have made so many stars over the last few days, it gave me the opportunity to tweak the original pattern a bit. In the last few I made, I changed each ‘point’ in the last round to 2 chains (rather than 1), this has given them a more pointier point. But if you prefer the more rounded look, then only chain 1 at each point. This pattern is written in UK crochet terms. Here is a handy conversion chart for US terms

NB: If you want to make the stars in a solid colour, rather than fastening off at the end of each round, continue straight into the next round. For the last round though you will be starting at a different point, so adjust accordingly. For example, the last round for the small 5-pointed star would read: R 4: *4dc, (2dc, 2ch, 2dc) in next 2ch sp, 4dc, sl st, Rep from * four more times.
