Sometimes, a little idea will pop into my head and I have to drop all current WIPS to make it and see if it will work. This one of them! It’s a small simple pattern so though I’d pop it here on my blog for free. This would make a great teacher gift!

For this pattern I’ve use Paris Drops which is a 100% cotton in aran weight. You can use any aran cotton for this.

  • Paris Drops in colours: Medium Pink (33) or Blush 20), Light Grey (23), Dandelion (14), Dark Beige (26) & Dark Grey (24)
  • 4mm crochet hook (US G/6)
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle
  • A glass jam jar. I have used a Bonne Maman jam jar.

This pattern is written in UK crochet terms. A UK dc (double crochet) is the same as a US sc (single crochet).

R : round
st/s : stitch/es
ch :
chain
sl st : slip stitch
dc : double crochet
inc : increase (2dc in the same stitch)
dc2tog : decrease
BLO : Back loops only

Make a magic ring in Medium Pink.

R1 6dc into ring, pull ring tight. (6sts)
R2 increase in each st around. (12sts)
R3 (inc, 1dc) 6 times. (18sts)
R4 (inc, 2dc) 6 times. (24sts)
R5 (inc, 3dc) 6 times. (30sts)
R6 (inc, 4dc) 6 times. (36sts)
R7 (inc, 5dc) 6 times. (42sts)
R8 (inc, 6dc) 6 times. (48sts)
R9 In BLO, dc in each st around. (48sts)
R10-11 dc in each st around. Change to Light Grey in the last st of R 11. (48sts)
R12 In BLO, sl st in each st around. Make sure to keep these stitches as loose as possible as they tend to be tighter than dc’s. Even when keeping them loose this round (and R 15) maybe tighter than the rest of the rounds. Once the jar is in place it does’t matter too much. (48sts).
R13 In BLO, dc in each st around. (48sts)
R14 dc in each st around. Change to Dandelion in the last st. (48sts)
R15 In BLO, sl st in each st around. (48sts)
R16 In BLO, dc in each st around. (48sts)
R17-26 dc in each st around. Change to Dark Beige in the last st of round 26.(48sts)
R27 In BLO, dc in each st around. (48sts)

You will now work in rows and make the first pencil tip. Continue from where you left off.

R28 8dc, leave the remaining sts unworked, turn. (8sts)
R29 ch1, dc2tog, 4dc, dc2tog, turn. (6sts)
R30 ch1, dc2tog, 2dc, dc2tog, change to Dark Grey in the last st, turn. (4sts)
R31 ch1, (dc2tog) twice, turn. (2sts)
R32 ch1, dc2tog. (1sts)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

*Join Dark Beige to the next unworked st from round 27, by pulling through a loop and ch1 to secure. The next st will be in the same st as the join.
Repeat rounds 28-32 to make the next pencil tip.*
Repeat from * to * 4 more times. You could have now worked all its form round 27 and have 6 pencil tips.

Place your jam jar inside and fill with pencils (or crochet hooks!)
